‘Shadowhunters’ Review: Malec Continues to Make us Swoon

Malec has seriously been killing it this season. Each episode they just get even better. Last week they were the best power couple and this week they got domestic. Their bond is just getting stronger and nothing can stop them.

Alec’s (Matthew Daddario) mother coming to town is never a good thing but Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) knew what to do. He fixed Alec’s soup, he handled her when she was in a weirdly good mood and he knew when to walk away. I don’t think it could have played out any better and Alec’s mom finally accepts him. It’s about time. We’ve seen it since the beginning but it took her a little bit more time to see it.

I do feel for her, being outcast from the Clave but maybe she’s right, her punishment matches the crimes. We all have to own up to our actions eventually.

This new enemy hasn’t been in our face yet, until now. Lilith is controlling Jace (Dominic Sherwood) and trying to bring back Jonathan. Jace was convinced that the owl was Jonathan but the owl is him. When we eliminated Jonathan as a suspect, I knew it was Jace, when he disappeared. I was concerned with Jace’s dreams and it’s all starting to make sense. How long can he hold off his dreams? He did open up to Clary (Kat McNamara) but he neglected to tell her that in these dreams she dies. That’s probably a detail he would want to mention when he’s terrified of his nightmares coming true. I want to know why she chose him. Why is Jace the one to play out her plan? Maybe now that we know the owl is Jace, we’ll find out.

Simon (Alberto Rosende) has his own problems to deal with. Whatever the Sealy Queen did, he’s protected but he’s truly dangerous to everyone else. He can’t even go to Raphael (David Castro) for help anymore. Granted, Simon did have impeccable timing but his shield seriously hurting Raphael didn’t help. I want to know what this daywalker myth is and if Simon is going to be okay. There’s so much we don’t know about Simon’s new ability and now this mark is making the mystery more disturbing.

Raphael has way too much going on right now. I really felt for him when his sister died. I liked that he reached out to Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia). It gives me hope for these two, even if it would be difficult for them to be together. If losing his sister wasn’t bad enough, he’s also got new vamp on the loose and I don’t think that’s going to end well.

I don’t understand why Isabelle isn’t getting good storylines. She had that great storyline with Raphael and it was great that she overcame the addiction but now she’s just an inspiration to everyone else on the show. She deserves her own storyline. She’s a great character. There’s a lot of strong characters on this show and they all have great storylines, so why not her?
