Melanie Scrofano made her directorial debut on Sunday with “Look at Them Beans” episode of Wynonna Earp. She wasn’t only behind the camera for this episode. She was in the majority of the scenes!
Episode three of season four was so much fun, and Melanie probably had a lot to do with that. Wynonna (Melanie) was wrongfully arrested for the murder of Nedley (Greg Lawson) and then had to win a cookout to earn immunity. Purgatory is a strange place now. It was always a unique city, to begin with, but it’s way more bizarre now. Who could imagine that was possible?
And what luck does Wynonna have to have to cook for her life? Predictably her cooking sucked, but she still won. Only because when you win your freedom, you actually get killed as a sacrifice to a monster that turned out to be Nedley, but the town thinks you were released and crossed the border. Unlike the other criminals that are hung for everyone to see. Just typical Wynnona Earp stuff.
One thing I like in this new Purgatory is that Benny (Ty Olsson) from Supernatural is the sheriff! He died in Purgatory in Supernatural, so it’s funny that the actor finds himself in another Purgatory. So far, the sheriff isn’t great. At least he did stop Wynonna from being hung and was going to give her a trial, but other than that, this city is exceptionally corrupt.
What happened in those 18 months? Whatever happened is weighing Nicole (Katherine Barrell) down. When Wayhaught was reunited, she was so happy and blissful, but since then, she’s been very down.
We know that Nedley went missing and was assumed dead, Nicole is no longer the sheriff, and she’s been protecting the Homestead with Rachel (Martina Ortiz-Luis) this entire time. And more monsters are coming after the house, but that’s about all we know right now.
It was quite fun when Doc (Tim Rozon) got stuck in one of the traps. It’s a good thing he’s immortal. We can laugh at that with no worries.
I’m so relieved that Nedley isn’t dead. I would have been so mad at the writers if they did that. But nope, in Wynonna Earp fashion, he was a monster this whole time and kept going back to Nicole. If only she had figured out, it was him sooner.
But then we wouldn’t have gotten that fun scene of Nicole, Doc, and Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) saving him, and Wynonna watching, smiling, while hogtied.
Season four has been so much fun so far. There are still the questions of what happened when they were in the garden looming over our heads and what did Nicole go through to make her so dark, but for the most part, it’s been a lot of fun. Even when Wynonna is cooking to save her life or fighting zombies, it’s all been fun. Will it continue just to be all-out fun, or will it get darker as we learn what happened?
