In only the second episode we have a major reveal and a cliffhanger. Things are speeding up as everyone is trying to get their hands on this mortal cup.
In someways Shadowhunters is reminding me of the premiere episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Buffy was thrown back into the world that she left behind and Willow and Xander were being dragged with her.
There was a lot of great lines, especially puns from the cast. Shadowhunters hasn’t quite reached that level yet, but I do love Jace’s lines. He seems to always have these great one liners.
I really liked Izzy. She likes to break the rules, like we learned last week, but she loves to flirt with Simon. Who could blame her.
We got a lot background this week, which made it clearer why Jace is helping Clary. I think we got too much information, though. Clary was asking questions and we got all of the answers. It’s good background, but maybe it could have been done in a different way.
Buffy seemed to fill everyone in on who she was and what she did in a very funny way. The writers could have taken from that, instead of just giving us a lot of information.
The big reveal at the end, where Clary discovered that Valentine was her father, now that was done well.
I love the big twist. It makes Clary more in the middle than before. How does she move forward with this knowledge? He’s a father she’s never known, so can she do what is needed?
Everyone wants this mortal cup to protect themselves from Valentine. The vampires (called the children of the night here) just took Simon for leverage. That would do more good if Clary actually knew where it was. Now she’s just screaming into the darkness for her best friend to come back. Last week I was thinking she was going to be this great Shadowhunter, not that I don’t believe that now, but I think she’s not quite ready.
I like that Alec is questioning Clary and not just welcoming her into the fold. That’s what I’d be doing if I was him.
I also believe Clary when she always felt like there was something missing. I would be accepting that life too. I think at 18 we are searching for something more in our life. Remember feeling like high school would never end? And for those of you that are still there, I promise you that it will come to an end sooner than you think.
Luke may actually be someone Clary can trust, but why hasn’t he figured out she’s with other shadowhunters? He says he knows Clary more than anyone else, but Simon has clearly gone missing too, so where do you look next? He’s a detective for crying out loud.
I thought Jocelyn was dead. Is she just in a sleeping beauty state? I guess that’s one of the things I’d really like to get down, the lore of all the different creatures in this shadow world. I know it will come. It came in Buffy. We didn’t know everything in just one episode.
The two hour season premiere certainly set up the world for the entirety of the season. The first two episodes of Shadowhunters have definitely set up the players, but not the world, completely.
I want to know more about Magnus Bane. I can’t get a read on him yet. Is he a good guy? A villain?
