Only Murders in the Building season finales are known for their fun killer reveals, but they also set up the next season’s murder mystery. The season three finale set up one that will shake our trio to their core.
I have to admit, for a second, I thought Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin) was the next one to be murdered, but then I realized it was Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), Charles’ body double. This will likely hit close to home for Charles, Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) and Oliver Putnam (Martin Short). They were all excited to see Sazz, but it looked like whoever shot Sazz was trying to kill Charles.
Jan (Amy Ryan) is probably coming to everyone’s minds. And if season four is the last, it would be fun to bring it back to the beginning. Only Murders in the Building was renewed for season four, but there’s no word on whether it will be the last. I hope it’s not, but season four could be the end, with streaming shows only lasting a short time. (But here’s to hoping we get a season five!)
It would be too easy for it to be Jan. We would have guessed it before the season even began. But if Charles was the intended target, that would put Charles on edge for the entire season and Oliver and Mabel. Only Murders in the Building is a pretty fun murder mystery show. Only briefly has it been scary, but it quickly jumps back to funny. This murder sets up a new tone for the show.
The season three finale also brought a new spin on the killer reveal. It was clear that Donna DeMeo (Linda Emond) didn’t push Ben (Paul Rudd). I knew it, and it was written all over Mabel’s face. But to have the murderer be revealed during the play was epic. The songs and the jumping back and forth were just a fresh take on the killer reveal. It made up for Donna being revealed in the last episode, but I already suspected Only Murders in the Building would have two killers this season. Technically, one was only the attempted murderer, and the other was an accident, but it made this season stand out, other than it being the most star-studded season yet.
I’m disappointed with the part that Jesse Williams played in the series. He ended up just being a nice guy and love interest. It was a waste of Jesse’s talents. Maybe he was just a misdirect. He was on the suspect list until the very end, but he could have had a more significant part. He could still have a twist coming. According to The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner John Hoffman said he would love to have Jesse back for season four (and Meryl Streep, Paul and Ashley Park). I hope Jesse’s schedule permits, and we can have the twist we deserve!
I’m not sure how Loretta Durkin (Meryl) fits into season four, but it was cute having her watch our trio at work and fist-bumping with Mabel. If there’s a way to write her in, that would be great. She played a much more significant part in the series than Jesse. While she wasn’t the killer, she was a big misdirect with her being Dickie’s (Jeremy Shamos) mother.
Season three was Only Murders in the Building‘s most ambitious season yet. And while The Producers‘ references may have made it obvious that Donna and Cliff (Wesley Taylor) would be the murderers, it was still fun to watch it play out.
