It’s not a full-on cop show or a detective show, but it has excitement. And there’s a lot of history with the family. And Micki is starting to fit into Walker’s life too. The pieces are coming together. But it’s still the moments between the characters that I love the most.
I asked for more of Bret (Alex Landi), and we got it. It was only briefly, but I absolutely loved when he had to see August (Kale Culley) drunk. Clearly, this boy has done no wrong in his life. And it was quite funny to see. All of them driving away from the Bonfire singing was quite fun too.
And Cordell Walker (Jared Padalecki) is getting the hang of this single parent thing. He didn’t ground August. He just made him sweat out his hangover. Honestly, I think getting that drunk your first time is the best way not to drink again for a very long time.
Walker’s other great parent move was when he could have easily made Stella’s (Violet Brinson) charges go away, but he didn’t. After seeing what his best friend had become, it was probably best that he made her face it instead of sweeping it under the rug. It’s the only way she’s going to learn.
There was another familiar CW face this week. Cordell’s best friend, Hoyt, was played by Matt Barr, who played Psycho Derek, Peyton’s stalker on One Tree Hill. He was a little bit more likable here, despite his criminal history. He seems like a good guy. He just went down a bad bath.
I want to know how Hoyt saved Walker. Abeline (Molly Hagan) believes in him, and despite Geri’s (Odette Annable) reaction to his returning to town, she clearly does still have feelings for him. Geri is definitely a badass, so not surprising that she wouldn’t show it to his face.
I hope we get to see more of Geri and get to learn more about her. Despite how little screen time she’s had. She’s one of my favorites.
Bonham (Mitch Pileggi), on the other hand, doesn’t like Hoyt. He couldn’t even stay at the dinner table when he was there. But that may only have some to do with Hoyt. There is something clearly going on between Abeline and him, which breaks my heart. The home they created for Cordell and Liam (Keegan Allen) seems so warm, and they created a similar environment for Walker’s kid to grieve. And that warmness had to come from Abeline and Bonham’s relationship. It’s a shame they have drifted apart.
Their distance created the opportunity for a scene where Bonhan and Micki (Lindsey Morgan) bonded, and I loved it.
This whole cast has amazing chemistry together. It makes for amazing scenes.
I was looking for Walker to define itself. It was trying to be a cop show and a family show, but it’s hitting that nice medium between both.
Everyone is trying to find their way now that Emily (Genevieve Padalecki) is gone. Micki is also trying to find her way in her new role.
Walker also has a lot of heart. It ties stories together with the past. I loved that this episode was called “Bobble Head.” The bobble and the car were Emily’s, and Walker named it Stella right before discovering they were going to have a baby. It’s such a sweet story. Not so sweet that Hoyt won the car off them playing poker.
But it shows the tight-knit group they were. You feel the sense of family, and despite the grieving, it really is a feel-good show.
With only three episodes, Walker has been given more episodes and a second season. There are a lot more characters scenes to enjoy coming our way.
